METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we might be able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a workable consistency compared to a gooey and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper slowly under the gum and the entire piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is smashed down into the concrete, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use very high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our team never uses any more pressure than necessary to clean concrete surfaces. These surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal professional.
